I love rant blogs. I also envy the writers behind these sites. I am not fearless enough to risk danger to my name and reputation the way they do. They are exceptional, for writing so openly about someone or something requires skill, knowledge, and guts—things I never gained from my parents and my vast blogging experience.

Yet not all rant blogs are acceptable and palatable to me. Actually, some rant blogs today are nothing but mediocre carbon copies of rant blogs I once considered as the "future" of blogs, those pioneering blogs that lambasted and criticized large corporations, movies, products, and the pop culture itself. Maybe, I thought, just like any ordinary human being, the writers behind my favorite rant spaces aged, got married, built a family, and seriously devoted their lives to it, and eventually quit blogging for good. I yearn for those years when rant blogging was only for those who have the courage to do it, and who do it for the sake of honesty and not of money. Anyway, before we stray from the matter at hand, rant blogging is slowly becoming popular these days. They are back, and a lot of them have sprouted like mushrooms just this 1st quarter of this year. Yet I am still not happy.

Although my favorite blogging style is now present on the Web, most of the blogs failed to entice me. As a self-confessed fan of rant spaces, I see these newborn rant sites as critic sites that lack something early rant sites had. I cannot understand why most of rant space writers today have to use bad, derogatory, racist, and politically incorrect terms just to gain readers and attention and to make their names and blogs controversial, I really cannot get why they have to do that. Years back, early rant writers did not have to talk like metropolitan hooligans to be believable and convincing. The only thing they had that time was the superb knowledge about their topic. If it is about movies, expect them to be 120% movie geeks; they would know everything about it, from analyzing scripts to actors and actresses’ backgrounds to director’s recent girlfriend to cinematography and cameo appearances. Yet now, rant writers are just foul-mouthed critics that talk nonsense. They lambaste pop culture icons while frothing with their own nonsense words.

One thing I noticed is that most of the criticism written by this new breed rant writers today lack the cojones that would give their critic piece some character and reputation. I have seen and read a lot of them who can’t stand by their ideas and beliefs. Some of them make disclaimers and apology when an infuriated commenter fights back on their blogs. Frankly speaking, I hate bloggers who use a ‘disclaimer’ to protect themselves from further reader fury.

Yet rant blogging is not just about lambasting, criticizing, carping, and complaining. These things should come with the skills I have mentioned earlier, as well as with the goal to correct and help people, and improve things the writer sees as improper and incorrect.
